Four fields of study are offered: Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Coaching and Leadership, Nurse-Midwifery (which is taught in partnership with Shenandoah University).

As a “resident,” nurses will enroll in the GW School of Nursing’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program via the school’s online 15-month RN-BSN pathway, while working as an RN at GW Hospital.

Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner
The MSN Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP) option provides the foundations for nurses to expand their scope of practice and to become leaders in their roles as advanced practice nurses. As an AGPCNP, you will lead and shape the future of primary health care for patients across the adult age continuum. This field encompasses the care and management of the adolescent patient (starting at age 12), the adult patient, the older adult patient, and the frail elderly patient.
Family Nurse Practitioner
The Family Nurse Practitioner option prepares registered nurses for leadership in primary care to families and individuals of all ages. With a focus on delivering high-quality, patient-centered primary care, the program offers both didactic and clinical experiences that prepare nurse practitioners to care for the physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual health of patients, families, and communities.
Nurse-Midwifery
The MSN Concentration in Nurse Midwifery is a collaboration of The George Washington University (GW) and Shenandoah University. Core level courses required for the MSN are completed through GW and the nurse-midwifery didactic and clinical component of the curriculum is fulfilled through Shenandoah University. The program prepares graduates as nurse-midwives who are eligible to sit for the national certification exam given by the American Midwifery Certification Board.
Nursing Leadership and Management
With the demand for new nurses higher than ever, many health care organizations are in need of nursing administrators. GW’s MSN: Nursing Leadership and Management was designed to prepare graduates for these upper-level positions by enhancing the depth and breadth of knowledge in management and leadership skills in the practicing clinical professional.
RN - MSN (Bridge Option)
If you are a nurse with an ADN and you have a bachelor’s degree in a non-nursing field, this may be the pathway for you. This option allows you to go straight into a master’s program via a “bridge mechanism” by taking an online Bridge Course the summer before starting the MSN program.
